This project began with a clear challenge — create a bespoke table that not only showcased the beauty of live edge horse chestnut, but also integrated seamlessly with existing storage already in the room.
At the heart of the brief was the requirement to retain and incorporate the familiar functionality of an IKEA Kallax unit, ensuring the finished piece worked practically within the space while elevating it far beyond standard flat-pack furniture. The design solution brought both worlds together.
A Kallax unit was carefully integrated into the structure, providing proven, modular storage while forming a clean, architectural base. This ensured the piece remained highly functional and consistent with other furniture in the room, maintaining cohesion across the space. Above it, the transformation begins.
A striking live edge horse chestnut slab was selected for its movement, grain, and natural character. Rather than removing these features, the design embraces them — allowing every knot, split, and contour to become part of the finished piece. The table was constructed as a folding leaf design, enabling it to transition effortlessly from a compact footprint into a full-sized table. This dual-purpose approach makes it equally suited to everyday use and social spaces.
Resin was introduced throughout to stabilise and enhance the timber. Natural voids and cracks were carefully filled, preserving structural integrity while creating a durable, glass-like surface that brings depth and contrast to the grain. The live edges were retained and refined, maintaining their organic form while ensuring a smooth, usable finish. This balance between natural material and precision design defines the piece.
The result is a seamless blend of modular practicality and bespoke design — a piece that respects the original storage solution while completely redefining its presence within the room. What began as a requirement for storage is now a centrepiece — a functional, design-led piece that transforms the space around it.
